Holly plants are the devil.
We had a beautiful day here, and Jason and I were able to spend the day outside, working on our front garden. He was super sweet and willing to help me add more rows of bulbs and remove the bushes. The cats also helped.
What we didn't know, until we started working in it, is that holly bushes have roots that are INCREDIBLY large and deep. We've dug up small trees that had less intense root systems. Also - they have rhizomes - which means that they send out roots under ground and send up shoots along the root system that create more holly bushes - so it's a MAZE of roots and plants. On top of the ground, it looked like we just had a couple of small bushes left in the garden (the previous owner had cut back a lot of the bushes). We were WRONG. Haha!
Check out the size of this root!
See that little bit of green? I have another one of these on the other side of the porch that has about three times that amount of green. Jason is saving the removal of that one for another day. Haha!
All in all, I did get two more rows of bulbs in, and all the other bushes dug out of the garden on that side of the porch, so a wonderful day spent playing in the dirt and the sunshine, so that's a total win. But please, please, DO NOT plant a holly bush unless you are NEVER going to want to move it and you hate whoever might want to remove it after you leave your house.
Here's a quick pic of the garden with two more rows of bulbs planted!
That is all I have to say about Holly bushes. Haha.
Have an amazing day!
Best wishes!
