Flower Day!

Somebody, and I'm not blaming any one person, bought hundreds of flower bulbs to put in the front gardens. And Somebody, has failed to get them planted. So now, Somebody is finally working on it and hoping for the best in the Spring! Haha. It's me. I'm Somebody.

I knew I wanted the garden in the front of the house to be a cutting / flower garden, so I've been collecting bulbs, ordering and purchasing bulbs since we moved in. My first set of bulbs were a gift from our Realtor when we purchased the house. I've had visions of a beautiful flower garden in the front, but I don't love annuals. I like them fine for putting in pots, but I really wanted a low / no maintenance garden in the front since I plan to put so much focus on our vegetable gardens.

I know that no garden is no maintenance, but my plan is the heavily mulch the front garden after I get all the bulbs planted, to help control the weed issues. I'll keep you posted as to how well that will go. Haha.

Normally you would plant these all out in the fall, and let them over winter, but I got busy and didn't get it done. The weather is fabulous this week, so I'm going to try to get the beds planted this week, before our next cold snap.

Bulbs need an extended amount of time in the cold (called stratification) so they are triggered to bloom in the Spring. I think I have time, since our ground has not frozen / stayed cold for very long yet. I'll show you guys the results - if we get any - If not, they'll stay in the ground until Spring 2024, and I'll just keep the bed heavily mulched over the summer. Regardless, it's getting done!

Here's the three rows I've finished so far. Only a few hundred more bulbs to go! Ha!

Also - for those of you looking for the best price on bulbs, wait until after Halloween (possibly Thanksgiving) - and check for them to go on clearance. I bought a lot of these bags of bulbs for $1.50 per bag at Walmart, when they went on Clearance. They leave them in the garden area in a box - so you have to hunt for them.

Best Wishes!
