Bloomin' Trees!

Yep! It's February and my new trees are blooming! We don't even have them planted yet! We purchased 6 new trees. We want a small orchard, with a variety of trees, but I was worried that we would end up with too much fruit to deal with. Six trees is a LOT of fruit when they really get producing. I was lucky enough to find a local nursery that had an INCREDIBLE deal on trees.

Some trees require at least two to cross pollinate, like apple trees, while others are self pollinated, like apricot trees. Please do your research before purchasing trees. The tree's label will most likely let you know how many you need.

Like I said, we ended up with six trees.

Here's a list of the ones we purchased:

  • Granny Smith Apple

  • Honey Crisp Apple

  • Royalty Apricot (I'll tell you a little about this one below - Haha)

  • Moonglow Pear

  • Moonglow Pear

  • Fruit Cocktail - Peach / Plum (I'll explain.....)

Ok - first about the apricot. We purchased this tree for one reason, and one reason only. Growing up, my Mom would make a dessert called Apricot Delight. She always used canned apricots. Guess what is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find these days? Canned apricots! So in order to make sure I get to eat Apricot Delight, we are planting a tree. Yep. That's the only reason. I don't think I've ever even eaten a fresh apricot. Here's hoping we like them! Haha!

Now the fruit cocktail. You guys aren't going to believe this, but this tree has two types of fruit on it. I've read that you can get up to 4 types of fruit on a single tree! In our case, I purchased a tree with 3 peach sections and one plum section. I love fresh plums, but I can do a lot more with peaches, so I chose this tree. Again, we don't need a TON of fruit. There's just the two of us and even though we will share, we still expect that there will be a surplus of fruit.

So, we are putting our trees in the front yard - we want to be able to gaze upon them from the front porch, and it will also increase our privacy up on the hill where we live. Plus, flowering trees are gorgeous!

Now, without further ado.....pictures of my blooming trees!
