And We Are Back!
Wow! It’s been a hot minute! So much has happened! I won’t attempt to catch up on everything, but I do want to share the newest additions to our farm!
We’ve purchased three American Guinea Pigs! We got them at 8 weeks old. Enjoy this picture of them in their little pool!
We put them in the area around the well. There’s a huge privet there and we were starting to see quite a bit of poison ivy around the base of it. In the first hour they were in the pen, they had consumed most of the poison ivy! They loved it!
Our current plans are to keep at least one of the girls to mate. We don’t know if we will definately do that, but that’s our current plan. We’d like to grow enough to keep our family in pork from here forward. In the meantime, it’s wonderful to spend time with them and enjoy their antics.
I know it’s hard for some people to come to grips with the idea of raising meat. We would rather eat meat that we know has been grown in a happy, healthy environment, than to consume meat that has been raised in a “commercial” way. The thought of our meat being raised in a crowded, sunless, sad environment, makes us sad.
Ok! Some other updates! We have grown out all of our Freedom Ranger chickens and have dispatched them. All of the American Bresse Chickens are doing great. We did have to dispatch one, but it was only because he was getting beaten up by the other chickens.
Our current flock is 8 hens and 2 roosters. Everyone is getting along beautifully, and we are getting a few eggs per day. It’s been so incredibly hot here, that our little chickens aren’t laying as much as they would be.
One upside, one of our hens has gone broody, and she is currently sitting on 12 eggs. We should see some chicks in the next week or so. I’ll keep you all posted!
I have so much more going on, that I haven’t kept track of, but I’ll close for now and vow to try to do better!
Until next time!
