Planting in Fall

No, I’m not putting in new plants, but I am moving things around.

As we’ve gotten more settled, I’m finally figuring out where I really want things. We have four raised beds on our driveway, but they are all starting to fall apart.

The one closest to the house has three of my annual herbs in it, Thyme, Oregano and Sage. Just behind that bed, is a Lemon Balm plant (left there by the previous owners). Last Spring (2022), I planted them, they over wintered beautifully and now are quite large.

I can’t leave them where they are, so I had to decide the best place for them. The area around our little pond, had always been covered in English Ivy (you guys know how I feel about that plant - haha), and since I’ve dug it all up, I have a perfect spot for these plants.

There is a large root, from one of our trees, in the bed, that Jason is going to remove for me, and they I’ll use that bed for the herbs.

Additionally, I’ll be adding my existing Basil plant. Now Basil is not a periennial in my zone, but the plants I have a quite hardy and are starting to flower. I’m going to move them over to the new bed, and allow them to seed out. Hopefully, the basil will grow back in the Spring (from the seeds), and then I’ll have basil without needing to buy any!

In the Spring, I’ll add more annual and periennial herbs, and it should make a very nice herb garden.

As an added bonus, the frog that lives in the little pond will get some new protective cover from the cats! Haha!
