The Great Pig Migration!
Ok. They didn’t migrate very far, but they did move!
One of the reasons we got pigs, aside from the obvious, is that we wanted to use “pig power” to take care of some of the vegetation issues that I’ve been fighting. We have quite a bit of space and it’s not easy to keep up with it all. We plan to have them root up and clear several areas, and moving them to fresh grazing areas is great for their state of mind and diets.
As you may have seen in past posts. I have cleared the beds in front of the house (by the front porch) twice. Each time I do, it gets away from me again. The biggest problem is that I don’t spend enough time on the front of the house and I HATE weedeating. This past summer, my neighbor pointed out the poison ivy and poison sumac growing in those beds. Now, I’m VERY allergic to poison ivy, and I’m assuming poison sumac will also treat me poorly, so now I won’t go into the beds, even to dig them up.
Our pigs LOVE poison ivy! So we moved them to the front of the house and let them get to work on those beds. Once they have it completely dug up and have eaten all the plants, my plan is the randomly throw flower bulbs all around it and heavily mulch it. About 6 inches of mulch. That will keep the weeds down, and in the spring, the bulbs will be able to push through the mulch. Voila! My hope is to just add mulch once in the fall and once in the spring, and just let the bulb flowers spread at their leisure!
I love flowers, but am a “lazy” flower gardener. Keep your fingers crossed that this plan works! Haha!
Some of the bulbs I’m planting:
Daffodils
Crocus
Gladiolas
Tulips
Lilies
Let me know your spring flower plans!
